ABSTRACT

Type 2 Diabetes (T2D) is characterized by permanent high blood glucose levels and develops due to inadequate pancreatic β-cell function (i.e. insulin secretion) in the face of peripheral insulin resistance. Tackling T2D represents one of the major health, social and economic challenges. Several studies revealed that the role of the cell cycle machinery goes beyond the sole regulation of cell proliferation. Increasing evidence support a close relationship between cell-cycle regulators, in particular the E2F1-pRb-CDK4-CDKN2A pathway, and metabolic homeostasis. We and other laboratories have demonstrated that cell-cycle regulators play a key role in the control energy homeostasis through their roles in adipose tissues, liver, muscle and pancreatic beta-cell. During this seminar, I will present some published and unpublished data demonstrating how cell cycle regulators could contribute to the development of T2D and obesity.

BIOGRAPHY

Dr. Jean-Sebastien Annicotte is a senior scientist at the laboratory of excellence European Genomic Institute for Diabetes, CNRS UMR 8199, Institut Pasteur de Lille, Université de Lille, France, where he was appointed group leader in 2012.

Jean-Sebastien completed his PhD in molecular and cellular biology in 2004 at the Institut de Genetique et de Biologie Moleculaire et Cellulaire (IGBMC), Université de Strasbourg in the laboratory of Pr Johan Auwerx. After a post-doctoral fellow in Montpellier, France, he was recruited in 2005 as a junior scientist at the French National Institute for Health and Medical Research (INSERM) in the lab of Pr Lluis Fajas. In 2012, he moved to Lille, in the European Genomic Institute for Diabetes, headed by Pr Philippe Froguel.

His research interests are focused on the use of cellular and animal models to study the role of transcription factors and cofactors in metabolic diseases. In particular his laboratory is currently working on understanding the role of cell cycle regulators in maintaining pancreatic beta cell function and identity during diabetes progression. Dr. Annicotte contributed to decipher the key role of cell cycle regulators in the control of metabolic homeostasis and authored more than 50 publications in prestigious journals.
